AREAS AFFECTED: Extreme Western Allegany; Western Mineral
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches, with the highest amounts above 2500 feet elevation. The strongest winds are expected tonight through Monday with northwest winds gusting around 35 to 45 mph. * WHERE...In Maryland, Extreme Western Allegany County. In West Virginia, Western Mineral County. * WHEN...Until 6 PM EST Monday. * IMPACTS...Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Travel could be difficult. The morning and evening commutes will be impacted Monday.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.

Precipitation in the form of water droplets is called rain.

an observable effect on rainfall, due to an effect called the urban heat island.
Compared to upwind, monthly rainfall between twenty and forty miles downwind of
cities is 30% greater.
